Thoughts on Living Matter 2015
'Thoughts on Living Matter' exhibition was presented across two distinct spaces. Inside the A402 gallery, sound pieces and sculptural objects were showcased, while the vinyl-structured installation, 'Breathing,' was set up in the open area of the Mark S. Taper Courtyard.
In A402, eight sculptures, each evoking aspects of the human body, were displayed. These sculptures explored themes such as hair (material), torso (shape), muscle and skin tension (elements holding the body), the relationship between bone and fluid (structure), skin (texture), gut (internal formation), holes (penetrable spaces), and mass (solid and penetrating). The sculptures were positioned on an organically shaped mirror mylar floor, cut to resemble the mirror floor within the inflatable sculpture outside. The mirror flooring reflected the sculptures, either duplicating their form or extending their presence into space. Visitors were encouraged to walk on the reflective surface, fostering a deeper awareness of their own bodies in relation to the exhibited works. Three of the sculptures contained audio elements—edited recordings of a heartbeat, bowel movements, and esophageal sounds—captured from the artist’s body.
The second part of the exhibition featured 'Breathing,' an inflatable sculpture installed outside the building. It expanded on the bodily themes explored inside, with laminated plastic sheets and a mirrored base simulating the exterior of a body, the skin, and the concept of the body as a container. 'Breathing' activated hourly, inflating for one hour and then deflating, emphasizing the cyclical nature of breathing and the dynamic relationship between air, space, and the body’s physical boundaries.
